Aamir: I'm an entertainer, I entertain
Actor-singer-producer-director, Aamir Khan is the master of versatality. In Delhi for Maneka Gandhi's People for Animals foundation, the media-shy opened his heart to TOI.
At present, you're associated with PFA (People for Animals). How much of an animal lover are you? Do you have pet at home?
Well!! I do love animals and as far as having a pet I have a cat at home named "Cubla". My wife Kiran found it in the bonet of our car. In a way, we are all animals with a mind of our own. So I believe that we should love and respect the environment we live in. One should value life.
Within your busy schedule how do you manage to find time for all the social work that you do?
I am an entertainer, I entertain. Though I don't get much time, but whatever time I get I see that it's used for a fruitful cause. I do best what I can to help society at large. Whatever I do, I do it with full passion. Enjoying every bit of what you're doing is what matters the most.
Tell us something about your association with the Tourism Ministry and the film Keep your City Clean.
I am very happy that I am the face of the campaign "Incredible India" to showcase the country's rich heritage and culture. India is a wonderful country and 'incredible' is just the right word. And this campaign will help towards promoting it. It's always good to be nice to our guests, so that when these people go back they have some great memories and stories to tell. I believe that all of us should take that extra step to help out guests in our country.
What art form other than cinema interests you?
I personally don't know much about art, but yes I am pretty interested in it. Whenever I buy a piece of art, it's only because something in it attracts me. The artist always doesn't matter, the work is what matters. I don't see it as an investment. One of the significant art pieces that's close to my heart is a sketch gifted to me by painter Manjit Bawa.
You are considered a trendsetter, a visionary, how do you manage to be different despite being a part of the crowd? Also, what do want say about current trend of cinema in Bollywood?
I just don't do different things; I try to do them in a different manner. I think every individual should follow his dream and make his best to achieve it, backed by practicality. I think, what has really changed is our audience. They want to see different kinds of films. Today's audience is more matured and practical. They don't want the same old stuff to be played. That's why films are being made with unusual subjects. Films with some freshness are being hugely appreciated and accepted.
From your goatee beard in Dil Chahta Hai to the Gajini hair cut, what's your reaction on the hair cut being banned in Bangalore colleges?
(Smiles) Even this came as news to me, as I heard about it from my friends who are based in Bangalore. This particular hairstyle was created after a lot of effort and experimentation. I haven't yet figured out why the Bangalore college authorities have objected to the look.
We've seen you acting with new faces in the industry. What makes you opt for newcomers?
(Laughs) Why, don't you like me acting with them? It's always my directors who decide the casting opposite me. Moreover, what matters more is that whether that particular cast is right for the character. I think all the new faces with whom I've been paired as of now, have done a good job and have proven their potential.
You are known as a man who's stayed away from awards. Why are you accepting the Golapuri Award?
This award is basically given to the "Best First Time Director". This is a family award given in memory of their son who passed away while shooting for his first film on the sets itself. I am happy to have been selected as the recipient and I will be there to accept it. For me, the most valuable people are the audience for whom I am making a film. With all due respect to them, it will be my pleasure to accept this award.
Tell us something about the film Three Idiots . It's said that you have signed a 25 page contact for it.
The movie stars Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani and me as part of the main cast. But, as far as the contract is concerned, nothing of that sort has been signed. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani and myself share a very special bond, so there is no need of any sort of contract to be signed.
